Ob Ob, Nigeria: FoamFlex200 filter cushions for an oily-water drainage system

In the Ob Ob drainage system in Rivers, Nigeria, oily water kept reaching a pond from the skimmer overflow. T1 Solutions tested one FoamFlex200 half carpet (1.5 m long, 340 g) in the pond: it retained 15.28 L of Nigerian Brass Light Crude and 0 L of water over 2 cycles. The result fed a filtration design for the collection basin.

.Challenge

What problem did the drainage system have?

Chronic oily-water spills were observed in the Ob Ob drainage system. The overflow from the API skimmer was directed to a pond, so the site needed interception and filtration at strategic points. The solution had to combine containment, filtration and easy recovery of the saturated material, with water levels that change.

.Intervention

How was the filter designed?

A pond test gave the numbers, and the filter design followed from them.

1

Test absorption in the pond

One FF200 half carpet was deployed on the oil at 33 C outside temperature, recovered, wrung out and used again for a second cycle.

2

Design the filters

Filtration grids were designed for insertion at the collection basin and conveyance channel. A cage system holds the FoamFlex filter cushions and makes extraction for wringing simple.

3

Compensate the water level

A compensation concept keeps interception stable when the level changes. Retention capacity can be sized from spill assumptions and worst-case scenarios.

.Results

What did the pond test show?

Oil retained, no water

One FF200 half carpet retained 15.28 L of Nigerian Brass Light Crude (API gravity 37.6, viscosity 3.7 mm2/s at 20 C) and 0 L of water, and was reused for 2 cycles.

Retention, not absorption

Below 15 mm2/s viscosity the result is expressed as hydrocarbon retention rather than absorption.

Recommended for operational use

The report suggests a gangway to simplify wringing logistics near the operating area. The official validation recommended operational use.

Frequently asked questions

15.28 L of Nigerian Brass Light Crude in the Ob Ob pond test, with 0 L of water. The half carpet is 1.5 m long and weighs 340 g.

Place filtration grids at the collection basin or conveyance channel and hold FoamFlex200 filter cushions in cages. The cages let operators pull the cushions out for wringing.

A water-level compensation concept keeps the filter interception stable despite level changes, and retention capacity can be sized from worst-case spill scenarios.
