River oil spill drill at Sondrio: containment boom and FoamFlex spill kit training

At Sondrio, in the Alps, emergency teams held a practical oil spill exercise on a riverbank to prepare for hydrocarbon spills in inland waters. They rehearsed containment, absorbent deployment and product recovery with FoamFlex systems and ready-to-use spill kits.

Why run an oil spill drill on a river?

A river oil spill response depends on trained people, shared procedures and fast decisions as much as on equipment. Teams from different organizations have to work together on a river, where the current and the bank make containment harder.

.Intervention

How was the drill run?

Teams rehearsed containment, absorbent deployment and product recovery with FoamFlex systems and ready-to-use spill kits.

1

Deploy the boom

Operators deployed a containment boom on the river from the bank, with a boat supporting the crew on the water.

2

Lay out absorbents and kits

Absorbent materials and ready-to-use kits were laid out on the bank and used to rehearse selective hydrocarbon recovery and the handling of contaminated material.

3

Run the intervention sequences

Operators in protective suits worked through realistic intervention sequences together, checking response times, communication procedures and coordination.

.Results

What did the teams get from the exercise?

Tested procedures

The exercise tested response times and communication procedures. Teams practiced containment, deployment and product recovery.

Better coordination

The joint drill improved coordination among the different organizations. Ready-to-use materials cut intervention time during the exercise.

More confidence

Practical sessions gave operators more confidence and familiarity with field work.

Frequently asked questions

A field exercise lets teams test containment, deployment and coordination in realistic conditions before a real emergency. Response quality depends on trained people, shared procedures and fast decisions as much as on equipment.

At Sondrio they deployed a boom from the bank with a boat in support, laid out absorbent materials, recovered the product and handled contaminated material. They also checked response times and communication.

Ready-to-use FoamFlex kits cut intervention time during the Sondrio exercise because the materials are already organized for deployment. They also let operators learn the equipment they would use in a real spill.
