Canal oil spill at Abbiategrasso: FoamFlex absorbent lines on the Naviglio Grande

At Abbiategrasso, in the Milan area, a hydrocarbon spill hit the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio di Bereguardo canal system. Weathered oil had piled up at the lowered sluice gates and an iridescent sheen was spreading along the canal. T1 Solutions laid FoamFlex absorbent lines across the canal to intercept the sheen, while targeted manual and mechanical removal dealt with the solidified residues.

.Challenge

Why was this canal spill hard to contain?

At the Abbiategrasso sluice gates, lowered gates had let weathered hydrocarbons build up, an iridescent sheen ran along the canal, and bituminous residues heavily contaminated the slipway and the north bank. The response had to contain the weathered oil, intercept the incoming sheen and protect the waterway downstream.

.Intervention

How was the sheen intercepted?

The absorbents handled the sheen. Targeted manual and mechanical removal took out the solidified fraction of the hydrocarbons.

1

Lay the absorbent lines

FoamFlex SorbTube (TB50), FoamFlex Carpet 2.0 (CRP20) and SLS20 were laid as two lines across the canal to intercept the incoming sheen and limit the build-up of oil at the sluice gates.

2

Remove the solids

Targeted manual and mechanical removal took out the solidified fraction of the hydrocarbons alongside the absorbent lines.

3

Protect the reach downstream

The canal reach downstream stayed protected while the upstream sections were stabilized, so the slipway and bank were ready for final remediation.

.Results

What were the results?

Fast containment

The surface hydrocarbons accumulated at the sluice gates visibly decreased within the same day. The FoamFlex lines intercepted the incoming iridescent sheen.

Downstream protected

The Naviglio reach downstream was not compromised during the work.

Staged cleanup

Absorbents handled the sheen and mechanical removal handled the solids, so containment started immediately and cleanup proceeded in stages. The contaminated slipway and bank were left ready for final remediation.

.FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Two FoamFlex absorbent lines laid across the canal at Abbiategrasso intercepted the incoming sheen and limited oil build-up at the sluice gates. Lines placed across the flow catch the sheen as the water carries it onto them.

No. At Abbiategrasso the absorbent lines handled the sheen, and targeted manual and mechanical work removed the solidified fraction. Using both gave immediate containment and gradual cleanup.

Yes. At Abbiategrasso, keeping absorbent lines in place while the upstream sections were stabilized protected the downstream reach. It also prepared the final remediation of the slipway and bank.
