International validation at Ohmsett
Interest in FoamFlex technology was initially driven by BP, which supported the presentation of the solution to OSRL Ltd. and ITOPF, two internationally recognized organizations specializing in oil spill preparedness, technical evaluation, and response management. The positive feedback received led to a deeper technical assessment process that culminated in the demonstration program at OHMSETT in the United States.
Located within the U.S. Navy’s Naval Weapons Station Earle in New Jersey and operated by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) of the U.S. Department of the Interior, OHMSETT features the largest outdoor saltwater test tank in North America. The facility is capable of simulating a wide range of operating conditions, including calm water, wave action, and different types of hydrocarbons, making it an ideal environment for evaluating oil spill response technologies.
Within this highly specialized setting, the testing focused on Falcon1, a skimmer developed using FoamFlex technology. The objective was to evaluate its recovery efficiency, operational stability, and performance consistency under conditions representative of those encountered during real spill response operations.
Falcon1 performance in realistic operating conditions
During the trials, Falcon1 was tested alongside several leading skimmer technologies currently available on the market. The system demonstrated an exceptional ability to recover oil-contaminated mixtures, maintaining strong and consistent performance across different operational scenarios.
The results highlighted particularly positive performance when compared with the alternative technologies evaluated during the program. The most significant advantage emerged under wave conditions, where Falcon1 demonstrated superior recovery efficiency and greater operational stability. This capability is especially important in oil spill response operations, where changing sea states and challenging environmental conditions can significantly affect recovery performance.
The validation carried out at OHMSETT confirmed the value of FoamFlex technology as an innovative solution for hydrocarbon spill response and recovery. The project demonstrated the technology’s potential for deployment in international and highly demanding operational environments, while reinforcing Falcon1’s position as a system capable of combining high recovery efficiency, operational reliability, and strong performance in challenging marine conditions. These results further support the role of FoamFlex in advancing modern oil spill response technologies and improving environmental protection capabilities worldwide.
