SOPEP kit onboard: reusable absorbents for ship oil spills

FoamFlex SOPEP kits give ship crews selective, reusable absorbents for oil spill response and routine maintenance on board. They are used and evaluated on tankers, FSRU / LNG units, RoPax / ferries and military vessels. A 12-month field trial on FSRU / LNG units confirmed their practicality in daily operations.

Where do oil spills happen on board?

Hydrocarbon spills can occur on board during bilge operations, bunkering and debunkering, in drip trays and scuppers, after pressurized pipe failures, in dry dock work, during valve and gasket replacement, in engine-room and crankcase maintenance, and in component cleaning. Traditional wipes and rags are bulky, create storage and disposal problems and generate solid waste.

.Intervention

How do the kits work on board?

FoamFlex SOPEP kits give ship crews selective, reusable absorbents for emergency response and routine maintenance.

1

Stop the leak at its source

Absorbents go on the leak and around valves and machinery to stop the oil spreading.

2

Control machinery leaks, recover from water

Pads and mats sit under and around equipment, and floating pads recover oil from bilge and drip-tray water.

3

Contain the sheen and reuse

Socks contain sheens. The absorbed oil is recovered by wringing, so the material can be used again.

.Results

What did the trials show?

Field trial on FSRU / LNG units

A 12-month field trial on FSRU / LNG units in Ravenna and Piombino, using 20 kg of FoamFlex, reported a saving of about 50% versus traditional rags and confirmed practicality in daily operations.

Tanker test on board

A tanker shipowner tested the product on board during maintenance and small-leak containment, with very satisfactory results in drying bunkering drip pans and in dry dock work. Benefits observed: easier handling, less waste, oil recovery and reuse.

Planned use and feedback

Integration into the ship’s anti-pollution equipment (SOPEP, MARPOL) is planned. End users report that selective oil-only absorption, oil recovery and reuse make FoamFlex more effective and more economical than traditional wipes and rags, with far less solid waste.
