Brass Canal, Nigeria: FoamFlex200 field test on light crude in a drainage canal

At the Brass Canal site on Brass Island, Bayelsa, Nigeria, T1 Solutions ran a field validation of FoamFlex200 on Nigerian Brass Light Crude. Four FF200 standard carpets and one half carpet retained 45.84 L of hydrocarbons and 0 L of water. The test confirmed the product for operational use in a canal and drainage area.

Why is light crude hard to hold?

The Brass Canal site is a tank farm on Brass Island, with a canal and drainage area where oily water has to be intercepted and the oil recovered. The oil on site was a light crude (API gravity 37.6, density 0.8364 kg/L at 15 C, kinematic viscosity 3.7 mm2/s at 20 C). Light, low-viscosity oils run through ordinary sorbents and are hard to hold. The operator needed field evidence, under real conditions and at 30 C outside temperature, that a reusable sorbent keeps the oil and leaves the water.

How was the test carried out?

Field validation of FoamFlex200 on Nigerian Brass Light Crude in a canal and drainage area.

1

Survey the site

The team mapped the canal and drainage layout from the air and chose where to place the material.

2

Deploy and recover

FoamFlex200 carpets (4 standard and 1 half carpet) were placed on the oil, left to work, then lifted out in sequence.

3

Wring and install filters

Saturated carpets were wrung out to recover the oil in containers, and filters were installed in the drainage area.

.Results

What were the results?

Oil retained, no water

The five carpets retained 45.84 L of Nigerian Brass Light Crude and 0 L of water.

Official lab results

Official lab results gave a hydrophobic effect above 96.25% and an oleophilic effect above 99.1%. FoamFlex200 can be reused up to 200 times with performance retained above 93%.

Recommended for operational use

Because the oil has a viscosity below 15 mm2/s, the result is expressed as hydrocarbon retention rather than absorption. The validation recommended FoamFlex200 for operational use.

.Products used

Which products were used?

FoamFlex200 standard carpet (FF200), 4 pieces, and FoamFlex200 half carpet (FF200 half), 1 piece.

Frequently asked questions

45.84 L of Nigerian Brass Light Crude with 4 FF200 standard carpets and 1 half carpet, and 0 L of water picked up.

Yes. The test used a crude with API gravity 37.6 and viscosity 3.7 mm2/s at 20 C. Below 15 mm2/s the performance is reported as hydrocarbon retention.

Up to 200 times, with performance retained above 93%. Saturated carpets are wrung out and put back to work.

Ob Ob, Nigeria: FoamFlex200 filter cushions for an oily-water drainage system

In the Ob Ob drainage system in Rivers, Nigeria, oily water kept reaching a pond from the skimmer overflow. T1 Solutions tested one FoamFlex200 half carpet (1.5 m long, 340 g) in the pond: it retained 15.28 L of Nigerian Brass Light Crude and 0 L of water over 2 cycles. The result fed a filtration design for the collection basin.

Santa Margherita Ligure | Environmental emergency training and simulations

As part of an environmental protection initiative focused on the port and coastal areas of Santa Margherita Ligure, FoamFlex spill response kits supplied by Test1 S.r.l. Società Benefit were deployed to support the rapid management of accidental hydrocarbon spills in marine environments. The project was developed within a particularly sensitive coastal setting, where vessel traffic, marina operations, and maintenance activities can create a constant risk of fuel, lubricant, and oil contamination. The initiative combined practical preparedness measures with regular training activities, helping strengthen local response capabilities and improve environmental protection across the harbor and surrounding coastal waters.
